christian lacroix fall 2009 haute couture

.

i always love the theatricalism (word??) of christian lacroix's shows. however, his most recent show's clothes still have a decided wearability, they are so beautiful and intricate. Haute couture is truly an artform, and an expensive one at that. this year the house of Christian Lacroix as it's been known was all but closed, retaining only 12 workers after reportedly turning a 10 million euro loss in 2008 having never in its history turned a profit. who said fashion was glamourous?? it's such a decadent idea of putting out entire collections of beauty pretty much solely for the sake of beauty, art and tradition. the costs of putting out such collections are enormous, with no expenses spared there is essentially no thought of earning back the costs through sales. this 2009 collection which may or may not be Lacroix's last was personally funded by the designer himself with many of the embroiders, seamstresses and shoe makers working for nothing, and the models were paid 50 euro each (the minimum according to French law), but i imagine a priceless honour in the circumstances. will Vlada be the last Lacroix bride to walk the runway? we can only wait and see.
